 UK Junior Doctors Ballot for Summer Strike Amid Pay Dispute: What You Need to Know

Due to a pay dispute, resident doctors in England are set to go on strike this summer.

In England, resident physicians will vote on strike action over salary in a dramatic escalation of NHS tensions that could spark a summer of industrial upheaval. The British Medical Association (BMA) said that if a majority vote is in support, strike action may be taken from July 2025 to January 2026. Voting will begin on May 27 and end on July 7.

This action comes after the government, in spite of prior agreements, failed to provide a fair wage offer for the 2025–2026 term. In 2023, after an 18-month battle that included 44 days of strike action, resident physicians agreed to a 22.3% salary raise spread over two years. But the government's answer to their demands for salary restoration to 2008 levels by 2027 has left the BMA's resident physicians' committee, headed by Drs. Melissa Ryan and Ross Nieuwoudt, unhappy.

Health Secretary Wes Streeting has come under fire from the BMA for failing to commit to talks that will address these issues. . "We met with Wes Streeting today and explained that he would only need to promise to negotiate a fair deal in order to avoid the necessity for a poll. deal that moved us towards pay restoration by 2027, in line with existing BMA policy," the co-chairs of the resident physicians' committee said in a statement. Concerns regarding possible disruptions to healthcare services have been raised by the possibility of strike action. NHS Employers has called for more communication in order to keep the health system from becoming overburdened.
