Urgent Recall 2 Million Eye Drops almost
A Blindness
Over two and a half million cartons of eye drops have been recalled across the country because of sterility concerns that could cause serious eye infections, poor vision, and blindness. Five products used to relieve dry eye symptoms are being recalled, according to AvKARE, the distributor, and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), including Artificial Tears Ophthalmic Solution and Carboxymethylcellulose Sodium Ophthalmic Gel 1%. These products were distributed from May 26th 2023 to 21st April 2025.
To be recall notice
points to “lack of assurance of sterility” in manufacturing, which was noted
through audit by FDA. Though the exact manufacturing problem was not commented
on, the FDA warns that not-sterile eye drops can cause severe infections. In a
like case in 2023, 50 infections in 11 states was associated with contaminated
eye drops causing one death and multiple permanent cases of blindness.
AvKARE calls on
consumers to halt consumption of the recalled products immediately and urges
retailers to remove them from shelves and return them fully refunded. The
recall is particularly alarming at allergy season when people need eye drops
more.
